To Share or Not in The Public Arena?

As someone who has had illustrations, character designs and even a full TV ad and campaign slogan ripped off and used without permission or payment, I find myself hesitant to share images of my work on the internet.  [Yes, all this stuff was copy righted, but lawsuits are a big pain in the arse to pursue. Anyone who has had that burden understands.] On the other hand, the wild and wooly realm of the internet seems like a great breeding ground for new ideas and new ways of thinking about what we all do and how we do it. A great place to develop new modalities. It also seems an easy place to become just some more artistic road kills for the scavenging vultures to fight over.

Humm, sticking with the old west theme that I seem to be developing here... on any frontier there are those who venture into the unknown for all sorts of reasons, taking risks alone or in groups. They go out seeking an opportunity. Always, a few of these seekers are out for the quick and easy pay off. Often enough these predators are scam artists looking to reap the rewards of someone else's labor and leave quickly before being snared. In the past it was all the decent venturesome folk who by the shear might of their greater numbers (and some serious organizing and team work) were able to civilize their frontier, ward off the vultures and make their portion of the frontier a relatively safe place for it's citizens. I am counting on that being the case here- not necessairly in this blog per se, but in this- the internet: the public arena.

I have decided that I am going to risk, and trust, and venture out; with some art, ideas, concepts and see what develops. And from time to time, move on. I plan to post things that I would not have risked publishing freely in the past to see what blooms. And all the while I'll hope that I'm not among those who fall prey to the predators.

Feel free to post comments, warnings about vermin lurking under rocks or any other thing you think might apply.
